Lars V. Hörmander, Swedish mathematician who was awarded the Fields Medal in 1962 for his work on partial differential equations. Between 1987 and 1990 he served as a vice president of the International Mathematical Union. Lars Hörmander ser fram emot att vara HRF:s ordförande under det närmaste året och att, tillsammans med förbundets medlemmar verka för fortsatt positiv utveckling av branschen. Han lovar också fortsätta sitt engagemang i ”Husbilskampen”, för att skapa en mer rättvis beskattning av husbilar, så att den svenska marknaden får samma förutsättningar som på andra europeiska marknader. Moreover, Lars Gårding (1919–2014) and Åke Pleijel (1913–89) were appointed professors in mathematics in Lund during this period. They had good international contacts, and the young Lars concluded that partial differential equations would give him the best opportunities in Lund. Lars Valter Hormander was born Jan. 24, 1931, in Mjallby, a fishing village in southern Sweden, where his father was a teacher. He did his undergraduate and graduate work at Lund University and obtained a PhD in 1955.
