Histamine and the histamine-forming enzyme histidine decarboxylase (HDC) have been claimed to occur also in the gastrin-secreting G cells in the antrum. In the present study, we used a panel of five HDC antisera and one histamine antiserum to investigate whether histamine and HDC are exclusive to the ECL cells.

Results: The ECL cell carries the gastrin receptor, and gastrin regulates its function (histamine release) as well as proliferation. Long-term hypergastrinemia results in gastric neoplasia of variable malignancies, implying that gastric hypoacidity resulting in increased gastrin release will induce gastric neoplasia, including gastric cancer.

In conclusion, gastrin is responsible for most of the food‐evoked mobilization of ECL‐cell histamine. The histamine response to electrical vagal stimulation reflects the effect of circulating gastrin rather than a direct action of the vagus on the ECL cells. ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells located in the acid-producing part of the stomach. They are important regulators of gastric acid secretion in the stomach by virtue of their histamine synthesizing and secreting capacity.

HISTAMINE SECRETION FROM ECL CELLS Histamine secretion from ECL cells is of critical importance for gastric acid secretion. In vivo studies have shown that the antral hormone gastrin is the main stimulus for acid secretion and histamine release. This hormone is released from gastrin (G) cells of the antrum after food uptake and binds to “Enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells” are a population of cells that are found in the gastric pits of the stomach luminal epithelium and secrete histamine. In response to gastrin released by neighbouring G-cells, secreted histamine from ECL cells acts on parietal cells to stimulate the release of gastric acid.

It should also be added that the ECL cell produces calbindin [21], and at least upon gastrin stimulation, the alfa-glycoprotein hormone [22]. 2. Embryology of the ECL Cell. The ECL-cell histamine mobilization was independent of the concentrations of Ca2+ in the perfusion medium (0-3.4 mmol/l Ca2+). In one experiment, histamine mobilization in response to gastrin (10 nmol/kg/hr subcutaneously) was monitored in rats pretreated with prednisolone (60 mg/kg) or indomethacin (15 mg/kg). September 1979 EM IDENTIFICATION OF RAT GASTRIC HISTAMINE CELLS 461 represented ECL cells such as the ones illustrated in Figures 2-5. Although the majority of apparent en- docrine cells appeared heavily labeled, many others appeared unlabeled or only weakly labeled (Figure 1).

After 48 h of short- Abstract: The ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells in the acid-producing part of the stomach. They secrete histamine in response to circulating gastrin. Gastric submucosal microdialysis has been used to study ECL-cell histamine mobiliza-tion in awake rats. In the present study we assess the usefulness and limitations of the technique. The ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells located in the basal half of the oxyntic gland area in the mammalian stomach.

Histamine is mobilized from the ECL cells to stimulate acid secretion from adjacent parietal cells (Sandvik et al. 1987; Håkanson & Sundler, 1991; Waldum et al.

The ECL cells are endocrine/paracrine cells located in the basal half of the oxyntic gland area in the mammalian stomach. They are rich in histamine and in the histamine‐forming enzyme histidine decarboxylase (Håkanson et al. 1971, 1986 & 1994; Kubota et al. 1984; Chen et al. 1999).Gastrin is a major stimulus, eliciting prompt mobilization of ECL‐cell histamine (Kahlson et al. 1964

Chormogranin A (CgA)-derived peptides, such as pancreastatin, are co-secreted with histamine. Histamine is mobilized from the ECL cells to stimulate acid secretion from adjacent parietal cells (Sandvik et al. 1987; Håkanson & Sundler, 1991; Waldum et al. 1991). In addition, both ECL cells and parietal cells are thought to operate under nervous control.
